A teacher who shot dead three shoppers because he was “bored with life” has been sentenced to death.

Prasittichai Khaokaew, 38, admitted killing three people, including a two-year-old boy, and injuring five others before stealing gold jewellery worth £12,625 (500,000 baht) in Lopburi, Thailand, on January 9.

CCTV footage showed the primary school headteacher’s killing spree before he fled on a motorcycle. He was arrested around two weeks later on January 22.

The Criminal Court in Bangkok handed gun-enthusiast Prasittichai a 1,000 baht (£25) fine and the maximum sentence of death by execution for committing murder during a robbery.

Prosecutors said that the use of a silencer on the gun indicated the murders were premeditated. They also pointed out to the two weeks after the murders in which Prasittichai was in hiding and refused to hand himself in.

Prosecutors ordered Prasittichai to pay compensation to the families of the victims of the shooting. The dead people were Thidarat Thongthip, 31, her two-year-old son Panuwich Wongyu and security guard Teerachat Nimma, 33.

In mitigation, Prasittichai claimed that went on the killing spree because he was “bored with life”. He said that he did not mean to shoot the child. His legal team did not indicate whether the sentence would be appealed.
