Two Ghanaians from two Catholic Dioceses made history at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome when they became the church’s first female catechists.

Mrs Ellen Bosso, a native of Peki in the Volta Region and a member of the Catholic Diocese of Ho, and Madam Cecilia Agyeman Anane, a member of the Kumasi Archdiocese, were both appointed to the Ministry of Catechists.

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and the sovereign of the Vatican City State, installed the two as Lectors of the Church in a colorful ceremony.

The two Ghanaian women were among eight (8) lay Catholics from around the world who were ordained as Catechists and Lectors by the Holy Father during Mass on the Sunday of the Word of God – the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – at St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Church is appointing female catechists for the first time.

During the Mass, Pope Francis presented lectors with the Bible in their native languages and the Catechists with the Cross.

The two Ghanaians were selected upon the recommendations of their respective Bishops through the Chaplain of the Ghanaian Catholic Community in Rome.
