Ten people were on board the fishing vessel Comforter 2 when it sank last Friday off the coast of Elmina.
Meanwhile, the body of one person, believed to be a Chinese captain, has been recovered from the vessel, which was carrying over 20 sailors of both Ghanaian and Chinese nationality.
Joseph Yeboah, Western Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, confirmed to Citi News that 14 people had been rescued, with 10 still missing.
“The accident occurred on Friday afternoon, and two of the sailors were able to swim until they were picked up by a sister vessel around 10 p.m.”
“The vessel went back to the incident place to search and picked up three more sailors, plus the captain, who was then dead.” Nine others were picked up by a canoe and were sent to Elmina, and later went to Tema. In all, 15 sailors have been recovered, with the captain dead and others injured. There are 10 more sailors still being searched for now, “he said.
