The three soldiers and a civilian apprehended on November 26 were arrested for assault, not robbery, according to the East Legon District Police Command in Accra.
The situation is being investigated, and the three troops involved have been handed over to the Ghana Armed Forces’ Military Police for internal investigations and punishments, according to the statement.
Three rogue troops and civilians were apprehended in a robbery incident in East Legon on Monday, according to the Herald Newspaper, after severely abusing a pregnant woman and her infant.
Chief Superintendent Kwaku Bempah, Commander of the East Legon District Police, confirmed the violence but denied there was a robbery.
He explained that a member of the same family brought his soldier friends to the residence in order to scare a sick individual into seeking medical help at the hospital.
“What I know is, it’s not a robbery but an assault. What I know is the brother of a guy who happens to be a friend of the people assaulted brought the soldiers in looking for their brother.”
“He felt that by bringing the soldiers there, the brother will be scared and come back home. So when they came and knocked at the gate, they didn’t open because they don’t know them and because they didn’t open, soldiers jumped into the house and started assaulting them,” Chief Superintendent Bempah recounted.
