Mr. Bismark Adjin-Frimpong, the administrative Secretary of Sunyani branch Secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has stressed the need for an additional driver to be attached to main drivers for long journeys.
He noted that extra drivers would assist the main drivers whenever they were tired to help prevent accidents that were mostly caused by fatigue.
The Secretariat stated that several high way accidents were caused by human errors, which were as a result of tiredness and lack of rest on the part of the drivers, hence, saying two drivers for long journeys could help address most road accidents.
Mr. Adjin-Frimpong, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani that long distance drivers ought to have at least 10 minutes break after driving for every four hours and again must hand over the steer to another person at most eight hours drive to avoid exhaustion.
Mr Francis Kyei Kwarteng, an Executive member of GPRTU added that general road accidents were not only from mechanical faults, but also as a result of weakness, over spending and overloading.
He emphasized that wrong over taking and reckless driving were also contributing factors of road accidents and therefore implored drivers to be patients to ensure road safety.
Mr Kwarteng therefore advised pedestrians and other road users to be vigilant on the roads to save their lives and that of others.
He called on the National Road Safety Authority to intensify their public education and sensitize drivers and the public on road safety issues so that they could collectively fight road accident in the country.
