Amazon Prime Day is due to go ahead in the UK later this year, despite concerns that the online giant had scrapped it.

Amazon has confirmed that Prime Day will definitely be held in the UK in 2020 – albeit later than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic.

An Amazon spokesperson said on Tuesday: “Over the last five years, Prime Day has become a special celebration and time for Prime members to shop incredible deals for themselves and for friends and family – and it’s something we look forward to every year. This year we’ll be holding Prime Day later than usual, while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and selling partners.”

It has not yet confirmed the exact date for the UK event, although said that Prime Day in India will be on August 6-7. “Members all around the world will experience Prime Day later this year. We look forward to sharing more details soon,” the spokesperson added.

Last year the day was held on July 15 and it has generally been in the second week of July since the event started in 2015.

When Amazon Prime Day first started it just lasted 24 hours but over the years this has steadily increased to 30 hours, then 36 hours in 2018, and 48 hours in 2019. It is likely to run for two days again this year.

Last year, Amazon offered 25 per cent off Apple products plus savings on other tech such as the Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Show.

There was money off the Fire Stick 4K, down £25 to £24.99. Best beauty deals included a £75 saving on the Ultimate GHD Styling Set. Plus there were deals on gaming, garden, alcohol and toys.

If you’re looking to bag a bargain, you have to be an Amazon Prime member.

The premium membership also gets customers free next day delivery and access to Prime TV shows, eBooks and even live music events.

It costs £79 per year or £7.99 per month – depending on the payment plan you choose. There’s also a plan for students. But, Amazon also offers a free 30-day trial to anyone wanting to try out the service. Just don’t forget to cancel your membership before the end of the month or you will be charged the full amount.

Last year Amazon slashed the cost of membership to £59 a year just before Prime Day although we don’t know whether they will be doing the same in 2020.

Nearly half of all homes in the UK now subscribe to streaming services including Amazon Prime. When the coronavirus pandemic began the retailer was overwhelmed with orders – leaving customers waiting weeks for delivery.

Amazon shoppers have been conned into handing over bank details in a call scam.
