SportBoost, a Madrid-based business accelerator, has teamed up with Wayra, a Madrid-based innovation hub, to invest in sports technology startups. Wayra and SportBoost, which was created by former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, would invest up to $770,000 in selected firms.

Telefónica’s innovation arm, Wayra, is a Spanish telecoms company. The metaverse, smart stadiums, data analytics, esports, streaming, and home fitness are all areas where SportBoost’s accelerator is looking to invest. Wayra formerly partnered with the National Cyber Security Centre of the United Kingdom and the University of Edinburgh to invest in AI and blockchain firms through accelerators.

Selected startups will work in Wayra’s hub space on Gran Vía street in Madrid and have access to sports industry mentors provided by SportBoost, which is also working with Spain’s La Liga soccer league. Telefónica’s various business units will support the startups with development of their products. The websites for SportBoost and Wayra will accept applications for the accelerator until April 20.
