Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority Leader in Ghana’s Eighth Parliament and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, has revealed that the Boankra Inland Port may miss its deadline due to delays in the construction of railway lines.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that because the Boankra Inland Port project is central to this government, the delay in constructing the railway line connecting the various ports to the inland port at Boankra will have an impact on the project’s completion.

The Boankra Inland Port project, initiated by the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), was intended to build a dry port as an extension to the Tema and Takoradi ports.

Being on the drawing board for over 11 years after former President John Kufuor attempted to bring the initiative into fruition, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in November 2020 cut sod for commencement of work on the $330 million project.

But speaking exclusively on Akoma FM‘s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Wednesday, May 11, the Suame lawmaker told host of the show Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “with the slow pace of the railway construction and delay in securing funds to fuel the project, the inland port which was supposed to have been commissioned in 2023 may not be realized”.
