According to Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications team, the Akufo-Addo administration is one of the best listening governments Ghana has ever seen.

According to her, the government listens to the concerns of the governed and addresses those that need to be addressed.

She made the remarks on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, May 12, in response to an accusation leveled against the government by an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are arrogant.

Madam Bawah said in her view, nothing appears to be working in Ghana under the Akufo-Addo administration.

From the transport sector, to energy, labour and health, she said there a lot of issues that must be addressed by the government.

She was contributing to a discussion on the demands by the Electricity Compony of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to increase tariffs, on TV3’s New Day show with Berla Mundi on Thursday May 12.

“Imagine of this conversation about ECG and PURC had come up when NDC was in office,” she said.

The Former Deputy Transport Minister added that “nothing is working in this country anymore.”

But in reacting to her comments, Madam Ellen Daaku said “I believe this government is one of the best listening we have had. At list there is a reaction always from the government on issues.”

She added that “We are all all Ghanaians we all feel what is going on but these issues were inherited. In 2015 when China was going through problem, Mr Mahama then President blamed our problems on China.”

They were discussing the proposal by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission to increase tariffs.

ECG has proposed 148% increment which the PURC will look into and either approve or disapprove.

During a stakeholder engagement on the proposals on Wednesday May 11, the EGC said it is looking forward to having the PURC approve its proposal as it is to help enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

The EGG gave an assurance that future tariff adjustments will not exceed 10 per cent should the PURC approve its pending proposal.

Technical and commercial losses also accounted for the increased proposal.

The proposal, the General Manager for Regulatory Management at ECG, Sylvia Noshie, explained is partly as a result of an accumulated adjustment for the past four years.

She said Ghanaians will pay more than the 148% next year if the PURC disapproves the current proposal.

She added that, per their projections, if PURC approved the 148%, there will be an average yearly increment of 7%.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Consumer Protection, Kofi Kapito, has bemoaned the technical and commercial losses incurred by utility service providers. He was particularly concerned about those of ECG.

The PURC hosted all the utility service providers at the Alisa hotel in Accra, together with other stakeholders, for them to justify their proposal for increment in tariffs. While the ECG is proposing 148% increment, Ghana Water Company Limited is proposing 334% and NedCo is proposing 113%.
