The Bawku Municipal Police Command has requested that the government intervene in order to buy back illegal guns in civilians’ possession in Bawku and its environs in the Upper East Region.
According to the Command, this could be one of the solutions to the area’s ongoing killing of innocent people with guns.
The most recent sporadic shootings occurred on Monday, May 9, 2022, and resulted in the deaths of four people, three men and a woman.
Superintendent Simon Peter Akabati, the Bawku Municipal Police Commander, told Alfred Ocansey on Sunrise on 3FM on Wednesday that “we want government intervention to buy the arms.”
“That could solve the situation, or if you bring your arm, we will employ you. That is more comforting than just giving them the money”.
Supt Akabati explained that “we are still investigating because we don’t understand why these things happening”.
For now it is very difficult to tell what brought the attack. “We suspect it could be a reprisal attack and four people killed; three males and one female”.
The commander said “five people have been arrested and we are arranging them before court this morning”.
